Random shots of the garden yesterday. Cucumbers, apples and potted flowers.

Kekumano Dinner

In three weeks we are honoring the Beans for their service to the community. In one of our meetings we decided to plant - something. Since it's an Italian theme, tomatoes were decided.

I looked around and found these tomato seeds - Jelly Bean Hybrids. :) So how many did we need? At least 100 was the answer.

3 boxes of jiffy pods x36 in each. So 108 plants have been started. Hoping that they sprout so and have a little growth by the dinner.

/fingers crossed

Garden Re-Do

After tenting the house and the garage, which we had a garden along the side of - we decided to dig it all up and start from scratch.

The hard part is digging down a foot through compacted soil. It seems we were only using a few inches of top soil with the last garden. Which worked and gave us plenty of produce.

We cleared the vegetation all away and used a hand tool to start. I got a few blisters. So I headed down to City Mill and picked up a pick axe.

Much better. I'm not sure of the exact length, but I'd guess it's about 10' long. We had to stop close to the Rosemary. We didn't want to hurt the roots.

braiiiins!

I was dead tired after swinging that pick all afternoon. Diane, and I were filthy dirty after digging and slinging dirt around, Maddie was 'slightly' dirty. Haha. We carted up a few buckets of dirt to her dads house to fill a depression over by the bus stop. Seems people were having a hard time getting off the bus. Hopefully the dirt and the stepping stones we placed will make it easier for them.

Diane testing the water flow

View inside the tube

We had picked up a cardboard tube from Diane's office. (Mahalo Robyn!!) We got a lot of fun with it - teasing max, and trying to balance on it. Diane had an idea of adding a French drain to help with watering the new garden. Since we have no gutters on the garage, we decided to poke holes in the tube and bury it. Here you can see Diane testing how the water will flow.

Filling it all in layer by layer. First was dirt - to stabilize the tube. Then we added our compost, and then pearlite and then dirt and kept repeating the layers. We also added a tube right in the middle so we could drop the hose and give it all a good soaking when the summer heat comes.

Now to add our herbs and tomatoes to the garden and see - if what we did helps create an amazing crop or not.
